Description

In 1765, the Cape Cod founders of Barrington Township framed this building, which was used until 1934 for town meetings, elections and religious services of all denominations. It is a New England-style meeting house and the oldest non-conformist house of worship in Canada, with an adjacent graveyard where the early townspeople are buried. The interior is fitted with box pews, and retains a strong impression of its original appearance. This site is most interesting because of its New England-style architecture and its religious and political significance to early settlers in Nova Scotia. The Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada has designated the Old Meeting House as a National Historic Site.
