Halifax is the capital of the province of Nova Scotia and offers visitors a wide range of activities.
A city that combines old world charm and modern facilities, Halifax is located on the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia. Its large natural harbour have made it a key strategic location both in historical times for Naval forces and today as one of Canada’s key shipping ports.
Citadel hill offers a fantastic view of the harbour entrance and downtown Halifax. It was this view that the British military decided to use to there advantage, here they built several fortifications, and the current Fort George was completed in 1856 and designed to defend against Land and Sea attacks.
Today it is one Canada’s most famous National Historic Sites and must see for any visitors. Each day there is a ceremonial firing of the noon gun and during the summer months visitors can enjoy vivid re- enactments depicting daily life as it was during Victorian times in the Fort.
Halifax downtown and Spring Garden Road area provide some of the best shops and restaurants to be found anywhere. Strolling the streets, soaking in the atmosphere provides visitors an experience often lost with the advent of modern shopping malls. The more than 200 retail stores including everything from gift shops, designer clothing and speciality stores.
The range of restaurants in Halifax is also amazing, and the quality of food second to none, no matter what your budget or pallet requires you will find a place to love. Everything from traditional Nova Scotia sea food (mmm lobster) to Indian curry houses, Thai food, Italian cuisine there is a wide range to choose from.
